Working holiday tax calculator (WHM and foreign resident, Australia)

Working in Australia on a 417 or 462 visa? Your employer withholds 15% on your first $45,000 if they're registered as a working holiday maker (WHM) employer. If they aren't, it's 30% or more under the foreign resident tax table, and 45% if you haven't given a TFN. Work out the tax on one pay, or your tax for the year and whether a refund is likely. Figures reproduce the ATO's Schedule 15 examples.

Payments from every WHM employer count. Unregistered employers use the foreign resident withholding table, and the payment you receive on leaving (DASP) is taxed at 65%.

FAQ

How much tax do working holiday makers pay in Australia?

15% on taxable income up to $45,000, then 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above that. These are the same for 2025-26 and 2026-27. There’s no tax-free threshold and no Medicare levy.

Why is my employer taking 30% instead of 15%?

Only employers registered with the ATO as working holiday maker employers can withhold 15%. Unregistered employers must use the foreign resident tax table, which is about 30% on the same pay, and 45% applies if you haven’t given your TFN.

Do working holiday makers get a tax refund?

Sometimes. If all your employers were registered and withheld 15% on income under $45,000, the tax withheld usually equals your tax and there’s no refund. If an employer withheld at 30% or 45%, or you have deductions, you may get some back when you lodge.

When does the 15% rate stop for working holiday makers?

Once the payments to you in the income year pass $45,000, your registered employer uses the next band rate, 30%, from the following pay. Payments from all your WHM employers count towards the $45,000.

What is the foreign resident tax rate in Australia?

For 2025-26 foreign residents pay 30% on taxable income up to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000 and 45% above that, with no tax-free threshold and no Medicare levy.

General information, not tax advice. This assumes you're a WHM with a 417 or 462 visa, or a foreign resident for tax purposes. Some WHMs who are Australian residents and nationals of certain treaty countries (non-discrimination articles) are taxed at resident rates; check the ATO page. It doesn't cover DASP, the study loan or other income.
