NZ tax invoice generator (GST, taxable supply information)
Make a New Zealand tax invoice with 15% GST, or a plain invoice if you're not GST-registered, then print it or save it as a PDF. It handles zero-rated and exempt lines, checks your GST number, and checks the invoice against IRD's taxable supply information rules for sales of $200 or less, over $200 and over $1,000. You can save invoices and your business details in this browser.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Saved invoices stay in this browser's local storage on this device until you delete them.

What IRD requires (taxable supply information)
IRD now talks about taxable supply information rather than a single tax invoice document: the details can come from an invoice, or from records like contracts and bank statements. If a GST-registered customer asks for it, you must provide it within 28 days for supplies over $200. What's needed depends on the value of the supply:
| Supply value | Seller | Buyer | Amounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 or less | Name or trade name | Not required | The amount paid (consideration) |
| Over $200 to $1,000 | Name or trade name, GST number | Not required | GST-exclusive amount, GST and GST-inclusive amount, or the GST-inclusive amount and a statement that GST is included (only if every item is at the standard rate) |
| Over $1,000 | Name or trade name, GST number | If GST-registered: name and at least one identifier: address, phone number, email, trading name, NZBN or website | As for over $200 |
Every level also needs the date of the invoice (or the time of supply if there's no invoice) and a description of the goods or services. The generator always shows the GST-exclusive amount, the GST and the GST-inclusive total, so the amount rules are covered at every level.
GST maths: GST is 15% of the GST-exclusive price, or 3/23 of a GST-inclusive price. The generator adds up the standard-rated lines, works out GST on the total and rounds it to the nearest cent. Zero-rated lines (for example exported goods) carry GST at 0% and exempt lines (for example residential rent) carry no GST; both are marked on the invoice.
GST number check: your GST number is usually your IRD number. The generator applies IRD's check-digit test, so a typo shows up before you send the invoice.
Examples
| Invoice | GST | Total |
|---|---|---|
| $150 incl. GST, one item ($200 or less: name, date, description and amount; GST number optional) | $19.57 | $150.00 |

| 20 hours at $65 excl. GST = $1,300 (over $1,000: a GST-registered buyer's name and an identifier must be shown) | $195.00 | $1,495.00 |
| Mixed: $500 standard-rated + $300 zero-rated (excl. GST) | $75.00 | $875.00 |

How saving works
"Save invoice on this device" stores the invoice in your browser's local storage, keyed by invoice number. "New invoice" suggests the next number after the last one you saved. Tick "Remember my business details" to keep your name, GST number, address and payment terms. Clearing your browser data deletes them, so keep the PDFs you send.
FAQ
What must be on a tax invoice in NZ?
For supplies over $200: your name or trade name and GST number, the date, a description of the goods or services, and either the GST-exclusive amount, GST and GST-inclusive amount, or the GST-inclusive amount with a statement that GST is included. Over $1,000 you also need a GST-registered buyer’s name and one identifier such as their address, phone, email or NZBN.
Do I need a tax invoice for sales under $200?
IRD’s rules for supplies of $200 or less only need the seller’s name, the date, a description and the amount. You don’t have to provide taxable supply information to buyers for supplies of $200 or less, though many businesses issue an invoice anyway.
How do I work out GST on an NZ invoice?
GST is 15% of the GST-exclusive price. To find the GST in a GST-inclusive price, multiply by 3 and divide by 23: $460 including GST contains $60 of GST. The generator does this and rounds to the nearest cent.
Can I make an invoice if I’m not GST-registered?
Yes. Untick "I’m registered for GST". The heading changes to "Invoice", no GST is added, and the invoice says no GST has been charged. Don’t show a GST number or call it a tax invoice if you’re not registered.
Is this NZ invoice generator free and private?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Invoices you choose to save stay in your browser’s local storage on your device.
How do I save the invoice as a PDF?
Click "Print or save as PDF" and pick "Save as PDF" as the printer. Only the invoice is printed, not the form or the rest of the page.

General information, not tax advice. The generator checks the information IRD lists for taxable supply information. Whether a supply is zero-rated or exempt depends on what you sell, so check with IRD or a tax agent if you're unsure. Different rules apply to imported services, secondhand goods and buyer-created taxable supply information.
