What a payslip must include (Fair Work Regulations reg 3.46)
Employers must give a payslip to each employee within 1 working day of pay day, on paper or electronically. Every payslip must show:
- the employer's name and the employee's name
- the pay period and the date of payment
- the gross and net amounts of the payment
- any bonus, loading (including casual loading), allowance, penalty rate, incentive-based payment or other separately identifiable entitlement
- the employer's ABN, if it has one
And, where they apply:
- Hourly rate: the ordinary hourly rate, the number of hours at that rate and the amount paid at that rate (reg 3.46(3)).
- Annual salary: the annual rate as at the last day of the pay period (reg 3.46(4)).
- Deductions: the amount of each deduction and the name, or name and number, of the fund or account it was paid into (reg 3.46(2)).
- Super: the amount of each contribution made (or to be made) for the period and the name, or name and number, of the fund (reg 3.46(5)). A new employee's first payslips within 14 days can leave out the fund if they haven't chosen one and the employer couldn't yet get their stapled fund from the ATO (reg 3.46(5A)).
Leave balances are best practice but not required. A payslip must never mention paid family and domestic violence leave (reg 3.47): record that pay as ordinary hours or another kind of payment instead.
Tax: the generator uses the ATO's Schedule 1 (and Schedule 8 for study loans) formulas for payments from 1 July 2026, the same engine as the PAYG withholding calculator. It withholds on gross pay less salary sacrifice. Bonuses, back pay and some allowances have their own ATO withholding rules, so use the override box for those.
Super: from 1 July 2026 (Payday Super), super guarantee is 12% of qualifying earnings, paid for each payday. Qualifying earnings include ordinary hours, casual loading, shift and public holiday penalties, paid leave, most allowances and bonuses, and commissions. Overtime and expense reimbursements aren't included. Each earnings line has a "Super" tick box set to the usual answer, which you can change.

How year-to-date works
Enter the year-to-date totals from the last payslip (gross, tax, super and net) and the generator adds this pay to them. "Next pay" moves the dates on by one period and carries the new year-to-date totals forward, saved in this browser if you've ticked "Remember". Year-to-date starts again when the payment date moves into a new financial year (1 July).
FAQ
What must be on a payslip in Australia?
The employer’s and employee’s names, the employer’s ABN if it has one, the pay period, the payment date, gross and net pay, and any loadings, allowances, bonuses or penalty rates. Hourly employees also need the ordinary hourly rate, hours and amount; salaried employees the annual rate; plus each deduction with the fund or account name, and super contributions with the fund name.
Is this payslip generator free and private?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up or watermark, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded. If you tick "Remember", the details are stored only in this browser’s local storage on your device.
How is the tax on the payslip worked out?
With the ATO’s Schedule 1 formulas for payments from 1 July 2026 (and Schedule 8 if the employee has a study loan), based on the employee’s TFN declaration. For example, $1,000 a week with the tax-free threshold claimed means $138 withheld. You can override the amount for bonuses, back pay or special cases.
How much super goes on a payslip?
At least 12% of qualifying earnings for the pay. From 1 July 2026 super guarantee must be paid for each payday. Overtime and expense reimbursements don’t count, so 40 ordinary hours at $25 attracts $120 of super, while overtime on top attracts none.
When do employers have to give payslips?
Within 1 working day of pay day, even if the employee is on leave. Payslips can be paper or electronic, such as an emailed PDF, but must contain the same information either way.
Do payslips have to show leave balances?
No. Fair Work says showing annual and personal leave balances is best practice but not required. Employers must tell employees their balances if asked. Payslips must never show paid family and domestic violence leave.

General information, not tax advice. The generator doesn't check award or agreement pay rates: you enter the rates, and it's up to the employer to pay at least the minimum under the relevant award, agreement or the national minimum wage (Fair Work minimum wages). Employers also need to report each pay through Single Touch Payroll, which this generator doesn't do. Working holiday makers, bonuses and back pay have special withholding rules.
