Do I need to register for GST?
In Australia you must register for GST when your GST turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits), measured two ways every month. Some businesses must register no matter how small they are. Enter your monthly income below. It's your gross business income, not profit.

How the ATO tests it
- Current GST turnover: the current month plus the previous 11 months. At $75,000 or more, you've reached the threshold (unless the ATO is satisfied your projected turnover will stay under it).
- Projected GST turnover: the current month plus the next 11 months. If it's likely to be $75,000 or more, you must register, even if the current figure is lower. A new business that expects to reach $75,000 in its first year must register.
- 21 days: once you're required to register, you have 21 days to do it. Check every month.
- What counts: total business income (not profit), minus GST included in your sales, input-taxed sales, sales not connected with your enterprise or with Australia, and non-taxable sales to associates that aren't for payment. For the projected figure, leave out the sale of capital assets (such as selling your ute) and sales made because you're closing or downsizing the business.
- Register regardless of turnover: taxi, limousine and ride-sourcing passenger drivers (before the first trip), and anyone who wants to claim fuel tax credits. The ATO's list also mentions sharing-economy and digital-platform income, so check its sharing economy pages for your platform.
- Late registration: you may have to pay GST on sales since the date you should have registered, even if you didn't charge it, plus penalties and interest.
- Voluntary registration is allowed. You then generally stay registered for at least 12 months and must lodge BAS.
