Quote or estimate?
A quote is a fixed price. Once the customer accepts it, it can form a binding contract, and neither side can change it without the other's agreement. You can't charge for extra work they haven't approved. An estimate is an educated guess; the final bill can differ, but under the Australian Consumer Law it shouldn't be much higher. If you're unsure of the scope, inspect first and quote, or label it clearly as an estimate with an upper limit.
Good practice for tradie quotes
- Expiry date: materials prices move, so 30 days is common. The template works it out from the issue date.
- Exclusions prevent most disputes: write down what isn't included.
- GST: only show or charge GST if you're registered. Not sure if you should be? Use the GST registration checker.
- Residential building work can need a formal written contract on top of a quote. In NSW, for example, jobs over $5,000 (including GST) need a written contract, and jobs over $20,000 need a full contract with a 5-business-day cooling-off period. Other states set their own thresholds, so check your state regulator.
- A quote is not a tax invoice. When the job's done, issue an invoice: see the invoice templates by trade and the invoice number generator.
