Free invoice template for electricians (Australia)
Fill it in below, then print it or save it as a PDF. It's pre-filled with typical electrician line items (example prices only: replace them with yours). It adds GST at 10% if you're registered and switches the heading to "Invoice" with a no-GST line if you're not. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

What a electrician invoice should show
Customers read an electrician's invoice looking for two things: what was fixed or installed, and why the parts cost what they did. Clear lines answer both and cut the follow-up calls.
Line-item wording you can borrow
Specific descriptions get paid faster than "labour and materials". Examples for electricians:
- Fault-find: no power to kitchen circuit, traced to failed RCD (1.5 h)
- Supply and install 2 x double GPOs, bedroom 2
- Replace 6 x halogen downlights with LED, dimmable
- Switchboard upgrade: replace ceramic fuses with RCBOs (6 circuits)
- Supply and install hard-wired smoke alarms to current standard
- Install dedicated circuit for induction cooktop, 32A
- Test and tag: 24 items
- After-hours call-out surcharge (Saturday)
If you're registered for GST, a tax invoice for a sale under $1,000 must show: that it's a tax invoice, your identity and ABN, the issue date, a description with quantity and price, the GST (or "Total price includes GST" if GST is exactly 1/11 of the total) and how much of each sale is taxable. From $1,000, add the buyer's identity or ABN. The template covers all of these.
Tips for sparkies
- Put your electrical contractor licence number on quotes and invoices if your state requires it on business documents (check your state regulator).
- Reference any compliance certificate number for the job, so the customer can match them up.
- Itemise materials separately from labour: it answers the "why so much?" question before it is asked.
- Give every invoice a unique number (generator) and send it the day the job finishes.
Questions
Do I charge GST on materials I pass on at cost?
If you're registered for GST, yes. Materials you supply as part of the job are part of your taxable sale, whether or not you add a markup.
I'm under $75,000. Do I have to register?
Not for electrical work alone; registration is required at $75,000 GST turnover. Below that it's optional. If you're not registered, don't add GST and call your document an "Invoice", not a "Tax invoice".
If the invoice isn't paid
Use a polite, consistent schedule: a heads-up 3 days before the due date, a reminder on the day, then +7, +14 and +30 days. The free reminder email generator writes them, and the late payment interest calculator works out interest if your terms allow it.
