GST calculator for rideshare drivers (Australia)
Rideshare is the one common side hustle where GST registration is compulsory from your first dollar: if you provide taxi or ride-sourcing travel for passengers, you must register for GST whatever your turnover. That means GST is in every fare (fare ÷ 11), and you can claim GST credits on the business share of your car costs and on the platform's service fees when you have the right paperwork.
Worked example: a week of fares
| Fares for the week (GST-inclusive, the full fare, not the payout) | $869.00 |
|---|---|
| GST in the fares ($869.00 ÷ 11) | $79.00 |
| Fares excluding GST | $790.00 |
The ATO says GST is worked out on the full fare the passenger pays, not the smaller amount the platform pays you after its fee. The platform fee is a separate purchase, and you may be able to claim a GST credit on it if it includes GST and you hold a tax invoice.
GST credits rideshare drivers commonly claim
If you're registered for GST, you can generally claim a GST credit for the GST in business purchases (the business-use share for mixed-use items), as long as you hold a tax invoice for purchases over $82.50 including GST. Common examples:
- the platform's service fee (most platforms provide a tax invoice or summary showing the GST)
- fuel or charging, servicing, tyres and cleaning: the business-use share
- phone plan and phone mount: the business-use share
- the car itself: GST credit for the business-use share, subject to the car limit
- dash cam and car accessories used for driving
Common GST mistakes
- Thinking you don't need to register because you earn under $75,000. Ride-sourcing drivers must register regardless of turnover.
- Claiming 100% of car costs. You can only claim the business-use share; keep a logbook.
- Reporting the payout from the platform as your income instead of the gross fares.
Questions
Do I need an ABN and GST registration to drive?
Yes. You need an ABN, and ride-sourcing drivers must register for GST from the start, regardless of turnover.
How do I work out the GST in my fares?
Divide the GST-inclusive fares by 11. $869 of fares contains $79 of GST.
