GST calculator for cleaners (Australia)
Many cleaners start out under the A$75,000 GST registration threshold, so the first question is whether you're registered at all. If you're not, you don't add GST and your document is an Invoice, not a Tax invoice. If you are, every cleaning service you sell, regular or end-of-lease, is a taxable sale, and so are products and equipment hire you charge for.
Worked example: a typical cleaner invoice
| Item | Qty | Unit price (ex GST) | Line total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular clean, 3 bed / 2 bath (fortnightly visit) | 1 | $160.00 | $160.00 |
| Oven clean (add-on) | 1 | $60.00 | $60.00 |
| Inside windows (add-on) | 1 | $45.00 | $45.00 |
| Cleaning products (recharged) | 1 | $15.00 | $15.00 |
| Subtotal (GST-exclusive) | $280.00 | ||
| GST (10% of the subtotal) | $28.00 | ||
| Total including GST | $308.00 | ||
Figures are an illustration, not suggested prices. GST is worked out on the subtotal and rounded to the cent (the ATO's "total invoice" rounding approach). Check: $308.00 ÷ 11 = $28.00.
GST credits cleaners commonly claim
If you're registered for GST, you can generally claim a GST credit for the GST in business purchases (the business-use share for mixed-use items), as long as you hold a tax invoice for purchases over $82.50 including GST. Common examples:
- cleaning products and equipment, with tax invoices over $82.50
- vacuum cleaners and steam cleaners (larger items are capital purchases)
- the business-use share of your car and fuel
- uniforms, gloves and PPE
- booking software and phone plans used for the business
Common GST mistakes
- Adding GST to invoices when you're not registered. Only registered businesses can charge GST.
- Crossing $75,000 GST turnover without noticing. You have 21 days to register once you're required to.
- Calling a document a tax invoice without showing your ABN.
Questions
I'm not registered for GST. What goes on my invoice?
Your business name and ABN, the date, what you did and the price, and ideally a line saying no GST has been charged. Call it an "Invoice".
When do I have to register?
When your GST turnover reaches A$75,000 in the current and previous 11 months, or is likely to in the next 12 months. Then you have 21 days.
The rules in one place
- GST is 10%. The GST in a GST-inclusive price is the price ÷ 11.
- You must register at A$75,000 GST turnover (current month plus the previous 11, or projected for the next 12), within 21 days. Taxi and rideshare drivers must register regardless of turnover.
- If a customer asks for a tax invoice, you must give one within 28 days, unless the sale is A$82.50 (incl. GST) or less.
- Quarterly BAS for FY2026-27 is due 28 Oct 2026, Tue 2 Mar 2027, 28 Apr 2027 and 28 Jul 2027 (calculator).
